My creative journey

I was born in Hobart, Tasmania and like most people, had a love for drawing from a very young age. Taking every opportunity to sketch whether it be drawing freehand or copying the latest Andy Capp, Obelix and Asterix cartoons or the daily sketches of football and  cricket players in the Hobart Mercury Newspaper.

Continuing down the creative route, I entered a number of art competitions, even selling an acrylic painting of a horse race around the age of 12. At the age of 14, I entered an art competition at the Hobart Museum and won first prize.

For many years, I was focused on growing my own business working throughout Australia, the Middle East and Asia and put my artistic interests completely aside. I'm happy to say that I am now based in the picturesque Macedon Ranges and enjoy spending most days in my home studio.

Recently, I was awarded first prize for a surrealism painting of a Hamburger, taking a cue from the Dutch Artist Tjalf Sparnaay. I also entered a portrait into the Moran Portrait Prize, and whilst I didn't get a place it was a great opportunity to paint someone's portrait under a bit of pressure.

I find inspiration from many of the old master artists such as: Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Caravaggio, Salvador Dali, John Singer Sargent as well as a number of more contemporary artists such Norman Rockwell, Odd Nerdrum (who I also count as an old master), Catherine Abel, Jandamarra Cadd, Sergey Gusev, Yupari, Greg "Crayola Simkins and Todd Scherr just to name a few, I'm currently focused on portraiture and surrealism using mostly oil paint.
